Using trust and integrity in order
to achieve business goals.
Robert Bruce Shaw has written a book
that takes a look at how trust in organizations, not only the trust
of employees but also the trust of a leader, can build a foundation
of success for businesses. Many failures in business today
stem from the fact that there is a great deal of suspicion among
those who think and act collaboratively in order for a business to
survive. This book is about building communities of trust
within business settings. It explores the changes that are
making trust essential and presents a new approach to creating and
sustaining trust in the face of adversity.
This book is organized into four
parts. Part one defines trust and presents the imperatives on
which it is built. The second section in part one outlines a
research based model to help explain why trust develops in some
organizations and teams and not in others. Part two separates
the three key imperatives for building trust, achieving results,
acting with integrity, and demonstrating concern, and details each
one. This section includes many examples from companies such
as Hewlett-Packard, GE, and Pepsi.
Part three focusses on the
leadership role in building trust. The architecture of the
organization and how it should be organized to facilitate the
building of trust is discussed. With an adequately designed
structure that can sustain appropriate levels of trust, improved
performance in an organization will be achieved.
The last section of the book looks
at trust dilemmas. Down sizing and restructuring are two major
issues that are examined. Problems in sustaining trust such as
uncertainty and competing demands from other organizations are also
commonly experienced.
The book has looked at all aspects
of trust in organizations and leaders that will impact
organizational effectiveness. The author uses many examples
from top companies in his experiences as a consultant to paint the
picture for the reader of how to implement strong trust ideals in
organizations. This is a highly recommended book for those
with questions regarding trust in their organizations.
